The test on the Eggleston Air Cell was carried out on October 12 and 13th, 1921 in the Curtiss 7 foot wind tunnel and was conducted by the Cox-Klemin Aircraft Corp., College Point, Long Island, NY., acting as Consulting and Designing Engineers. The model was a 1:72 scale model and operated in a 30 mph tunnel. The struts were designed to add lift to the aircraft's design.
The L/D graph below shows the models performance with and without the cells. The designer of the aircraft was Col. Thomas L. Eggleston.

Bless him.

"Air Cell"...he might have thought of a line of planes where you could tack on "boxes" consisting of an upper-and-lower wing segment with supports--each such segment would be a cell.

Materials of the day just not up to snuff.
