PT PAL estimates that the procurement contracts for the third and fourth Merah Putih frigates will be signed in 2026.
PT PAL expects the contract for Indonesia's third and fourth Merah Putih frigates to be signed in 2026, the company's CEO, Kaharuddin Djenod, told Jane's in a recent interview.
These follow-on ships will retain the shape of the first Merah Putih Frigate, but are designed to accommodate better combat capabilities, Djenod said.
"This ship will not have more than 64 VLS [vertical launch system] cells because that is the maximum number for this design," he said. "But each cell and ventilation system in the VLS can potentially accommodate a larger type of missile."
This approach will allow the Indonesian Navy to increase the overall combat effectiveness of this class without increasing the number of launch cells.
Indonesia's Merah Putih Frigate program is based on Babcock's Arrowhead 140 design, although PT PAL has modified the basic configuration to meet the Indonesian Navy's requirements.
Among the changes is the integration of a denser missile array than that carried by the Royal Navy's Type 31 frigates, which are also based on the Arrowhead 140 design.
These modifications were carried out by PT PAL, with the vessels built according to Lloyd's Register classification standards.
Besides the overall hull shape, the third and fourth ships are expected to retain the dimensions, propulsion layout and general combat system architecture of the first two frigates, Djenod said.
