Trying to find a 1979 novel about USArmy in Germany

Back in 1982 I read an American published paperback novel in black with gold and silver units as chess pieces on the cover. The story involves a chess game between a US and unusually a female West German officer against the backdrop of real exercises in a time of tension post Vietnam.
I mislaid the book and have been trying to find it for ages.

I know and have seen the book uk 75, alas I'm not into novel's, but I think a mate of mine might have it on his bookshelf......I'll try and contact him!
