The real history of Easter Island

The locals have been lucky as because of its remoteness Chile has been a light touch political power and it’s only in the last couple of decades Chile has taken more interest as it gives them control over a vast swathe of the Pacific Ocean.

Out of the interest what defence forces does Chile have to control something like 2000+ miles of Pacific Ocean?

Based on the island now there are two Cessna O2 and two patrolboats plus a Marine Platoon. The Navy has plans to buil a pier and a base at Hanga Piko harbour so as to be able to deploy permanently an OPV of the Fassmer 80 class,plus a couple smaller Taitao class patrol ships so as to be able to patrol the large marine preservation areas around Easter Island and the Desventuradas archipielago. Some helicopters to provide the OPV and smaller ships would also be needed. BTW, just a couple days ago the local elders council asked for the P3 Orion aircraft of the Naval aviation to wear a traditional sea bird emblem as a show of recognition to the Chilean Navy.
