US Army approves Sentinel A4 air defense radar for low-rate production

The US Army's Sentinel A4 radar that can track challenging threat targets like cruise missiles is moving into low-rate initial production.

Dec 17, 2025 -First full deployment of the A4 X-band radar to defend Washington D. C. Claiming 75% increase in detection range with the ability to track many more targets simultaneously over previous RTX/Thales A3 variant and a future growth capability with new Lockheed antenna as only 60 % populated.

First thoughts as why not 100% populated array, assuming cost would jump for the extra GaN and maybe require a larger power generator and cooling?
