This is frakkin sad. The knowledge base they're letting go. It sucks.

I think that went by the wayside a while ago when the decision was made to increase to diameter of the Ares V first stage to ~10 meters.

It stops the Direct Launch people in their tracks and it also eliminates life extension for the space shuttle as a possibility as well.
 
On the note of a shrinking knowledge base, I just read in Defense News that they're having a hellava time designing badly needed replacement GPS satellites, a contract originally awarded to Rockwell and then McDonald Douglas, because so much personnel involved and experienced in the project were lost through mergers.
