Sig w/ Warren AFB debacle

A purely political decision to not use the Glock...ugh

I guess they had to get hit by lightning to get out of the dark.
 
SiG quality control seems to really have fallen off since the P226 days. I thought they had fixed the design error causing the gun to sometimes fire if dropped, but if I remember correctly they didn't issue the sort of critically important recall notice a responsible company would have.

So I guess my question is if M17s or M18s manufactured prior to that design were brought to unit armorers to be modified with the redesigned component? Or did this fix not solve the issue at all? Or was this some sort of other failure caused by woefully bad quality control/assurance?

As for alternatives and the opinion expressed by tangoactual, I fail to see what the Glock offering provides over most of the other handguns tested under the program. I'd bet good money the other MHS competitors didn't share the P320's tendency to fire when dropped.

TLDR:
No one knows what the current mechanical issue with the SIG is*
There is a chance there may not be one
The SIG has no trigger safety, which means some of the uncommanded discharges may actually be the gun snagging on clothing etc
The reputational damage may be insurmountable

* The SIG is striker-fired, the striker is partially cocked (ie spring compressed) at all times. There was a drop safety issue for the civilian guns SIG didn't do a recall for, just a voluntary upgrade, but apparently the military guns have a different configuration (thumb-safety) and didn't need it.
