A Chris Foss mystery, this picture entitled online as 'Downbound Train' is dated to 1969, that can be partially verified by two things, the artists surname is spelled out in full, it clearly predates the authors famous monogram. The style of the art also matches that of the cover of a 1970 non-fiction book entitled 'The Coming Of The Space Age' edited by Arthur C. Clarke.

There is a mention on a private Facebook group that the title given is incorrect, but it does not seem to have spread out to the wider internet. Nor is the correct title given in what can be read from that Facebook Group.

1969's 'Tales of Time and Space' edited by Ross R. Olney was an anthology of science fiction stories aimed at younger readers. It contained stories by well known names such as Frederick Brown, Arthur C. Clarke & Robert Silverberg, along with lesser known figures such as William C. Gault and Larry Sternig. The cover and interior art for the 1969 edition were by Harvey Kidder. For it's 1977 reprinting the cover art was supplied by Tom Nachreiner but Kidder's interior art from the earlier edition was retained. It's interesting to compare these two covers and see the difference eight years makes.

Let me introduce Niseko Fortress 1986 by Yoshio Aramaki(荒巻義雄). It is a novel in which U.S. forces (along with Japanese forces under U.S. command) and Soviet forces clash on the island of Hokkaido in the Japanese archipelago. The illustrations are by Michiaki Sato(佐藤道明), and I own a fan book for this novel series.

It is sad that there are so many wonderful works of science fiction in the world, yet they remain separated by language barriers. I would like to have a word with the people who built the Tower of Babel.

Even just looking at the cover illustrations everyone posts lets my imagination expand, and I can let my consciousness drift into the depths.

Bringing up a post from April 3 2021:

... Paul Suntup at Suntup Editions has given me permission to show the full set of illustrations I produced for their new '1984'

He seems to be doing OK with a mixture of private comissions, prints of older work and now illustration.

He has commented that while book covers were the core of his income once, they did impose compositional restrictions that became restrictive - as far as I can tell, the work always ended up lopsided with a concentration of characters and action on the right and then attenuated secondary action on the left for wraparound cover art.

From my collection, the over to the 1990 UK edition of Arthur C. Clarke's '2001: A Space Odyssey' the cover is by an almost unrecognisable Peter Andrew Jones (Compare this with any of his 1970s covers.)

In a possible coincidence the following issue featured the Traveller R-PGs take on the creature from 'Alien' (1979), Tom Smith supplied the illustrations for that article as well.

It is speculated that this ATV was inspired by the Landmaster in the 1977 film 'Damnation Alley'.

I count 'Warhammer 40K' as 'Scicence Fiction Adjacent' so no problems. Regarding the Landmaster, here's a screenshot taken from 'Damnation Alley' (1977) from the Wikipedia article on the vehicle.
