Remove the city of spires (antennae?) and make the bowl it sits in an exhaust...I could see it as a (far future) spacecraft. Lots of tankage from the looks of it.

In the 1950s Ballantyne Books released a series of anthologies edited by Frederick Pohl entitled 'Star Science Fiction'. In 1972 the entire six book series was reprinted with covers by John Berkey. The cover art to the fourth book in the series was one of the artworks purchased by George Lucas while he was working on 'Star Wars', he found it inspiring....

I've found a website that goes into just what Lucas was looking at when he was working on that film.

Wilf Hardy (1938 - 2016) was a cover illustator based in the UK who supplied cover art for many of the magazines published in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s. Most well known for aviation art, he also did some space and science fiction artwork.

I was searching for the book entitled 'Space Wars Fact & Fiction' and managed to find a PDF copy of the book on the Internet Archive. It turns out to have been put out by Octopus, the company responsible for the book who's cover was published in the OP of this thread.

Published in 1980, the book is anonymous, with neither contributing authors nor the artists being credited. The contents are mixture of prose articles/fiction and a 'Dan Dare' style comic book called 'Space Cadet'. The four images identified as being by Wilf Hardy I posted earlier all come from this book. The artwork that southwestforests expressed an interest in comes from the books endpapers. Attached is the cover art and some samples of the interior artwork. I think the cover is also by Wilf Hardy as I can just make out his signature in the bottom right of the picture. The 'Space Cadet' image comes from the third of the strips in the book.

A pair of scenes from the first of the three 'Space Cadet' comics included in 'Space Wars Fact and Fiction' (1980) set in the year 2805, this episode sees space pirates steal HMS Victory from her plinth in Portsmouth. Someone on the ISFDB speculates the artwork for the comic strip was done by an artist named Gerry Wood.

And apparently it was based of this craft which appears in a 1971 'Flash Gordon' comic strip, and on the page I found that I found confirmation that the original intention was that Skywalker was going to be female, which raises the question, how much of that iteration made it into Princess Leia....?

A 'Clean' version of the artwork by Wilf Hardy that accompanies the article entitled 'Man Reaches Out' in 'Space Wars Fact and Fiction' (1980), this was posted to Reddit with no information on where the poster had got it from.

A 1978 artwork by Dan Goozee, the artist who's later work featured in Post #1,362, the title given on the site I found it was 'Battle of the Galaxies' and it's a clear example of the cultural shadow cast by the 1977 film 'Star Wars'.
