Cool! Lots of images to add to the sci fi spacesuits and sci fi costumes folders.

Whoa! Somewhat Uncanny how similar in some points that ship is to a kitbashed model I started in 2019 and then oh so slowly poke along at making progress on -- and I had no access to the publication or the art.

In 1962 I asked the cartoonist about this question, and he told me that the bubble is built with an organic superplastic designed to adapt to human skin while maintaining atmospheric pressure. When they take off the spacesuit the bag deflates like a balloon. When the pressure suits of the Mercury project were designed there were many problems with the neck sealing that caused the astronauts to faint, they should have used the system in the illustration. I should have asked about the pressurized underpants of the type on the left, today the patent would be worth millions.

Going waaay back. The cover art was for a Brazilian edition of Neuromancer. Original art was by Barcelona-based Josan Gonzalez which was then tweaked by Rio-based Art Director Milton Menezes.

Look closely, and the Launch Crew are wearing ST:TOS uniforms . . .

Looking at it now zoomed in on a full size PC screen I disagree.
Collars are different.
Detailing on chest is there which does not exist on a ST TOS uniform tunic.
Sleeves have a lengthwise detail which does not exist on a TOS uniform sleeve.

The artwork by Chris Foss for the 1988 UK reprinting of Jack Vance's 1967 novel 'The Palace of Love' the third in the series 'Demon Princes'. This science fiction revenge series was how I got introduced to Jack Vance. As to the cover, it's actually based on a scene from the book.

Disney's The Black Hole (1979) wasn't a great film by any measure, but its design was interesting and original. Robert McCall was originally enlisted as production designer but little, if any of his work made it into the film. Peter Ellenshaw is instead responsible for the main spaceships - the huge cathedral-like Cygnus, and the smaller Palomino. There is a great sequence in which the Palomino investigates what seems to be the dead and abandoned Cygnus and then suddenly, the lights come on...

The prolonged destruction of the Cygnus at the climax is also a great visual spectacle.

There have been from time to time rumours of a remake/reboot.

Designed by Ron Cobb, the Nostromo in Alien underwent some changes during the preproduction. At first it was a relatively small vessel called the Snark.

Cobb's original concepts for the bridge were very spacious, but budget constraints forced the more claustrophobic design that we know.

A problem we wouldn't know of today with computer generated imagery. Syd Mead thought that a sphere would be a logical design for a spaceship, so he came up with these designs for the Colonial Marines ship, the Sulaco for Aliens. However, James Cameron pointed out that keeping depth of field in focussing on a physical model of a sphere would be difficult compated to the more slab-like design. These are the early spherical ideas.
