Scaled Composites 355 & Northrop Grumman R02/H03 "Firebird" series

We definitely know that at least two examples were built. The plane in the center of the picture seems to me to have the shadow of a propeller. Or am I reading too much into the image? Unfortunetely, the photo I included is the best resolution I could find. As far as the date the picture was taken, is there any way to determine that? The satellite photo currently exists on all three sites I mentioned. (I looked at the photo sections for planespotters and airliners.com for the Mojave airport to see if someone might have included these strange beasts, but no one had.)

Rather Northrop Grumman Firebirds (Scaled only did the prototype, which was smaller and substantially different, as evidenced by these photos:

There were at least three:
  • Two of the R02 version [N241PR] (c/n 00001) and [N412DB] (c/n 00002)
  • One of the H03 version [N326JG] (c/n 00001).

I have never seen any photo of [N412DB] and I doubt any have ever been released.
A fourth registration [N248MS] was once also rumored as a Firebird registration by Mike Laughlin on Twitter, but this was not confirmed by the FAA database.


There are slight differences between the two versions, such as longer wings on the R02 and changes to the engine and nacelle configuration.
