MOSCOW - Russia has successfully test launched a nuclear-capable missile that struck its target across the country in the Russian Far East, Russian news agencies said, citing the Ministry of Defence.

"Prelaunch operations, the launch and flight went strictly according to plan," a spokesman for Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, Col. Vadim Konval, was quoted by Interfax as saying. "The test hit the intended target area on the Kamchatka peninsula with astounding accuracy," he said. The RS-20V Voevoda intercontinental ballistic missile - known by the NATO codename Satan - launched about 6:30 a.m. GMT Dec. 24 from Orenburg in the south Urals and hit its hypothetical target on the Kamchatka peninsula, the spokesman said.

MOSCOW - Russia must develop new offensive weapons systems to counter U.S. missile defenses and prevent Americans from feeling they can "do whatever they want," Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Dec. 29.

A U.S. plan to create a mobile missile shield means Russia must develop new offensive weapons, Prime Minister Vladmir Putin said Dec. 29. (ALEXEY NIKOLSKY / AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) "To preserve the balance, we must develop offensive weapons systems, not missiles defense systems as the United States is doing," Putin was quoted by state news agencies as saying while on a working visit to Russia's far east region.
