Lada is a character in Eastern Slavic folklore, a sort-of common female given name and also the name of a kind of ancient Rus' longship (hence the grill logo of the Lada cars, a single-sail longship)

But on the topic of the cars, the Soviet-era Fiat 124-copies are long gone. Lada (VAZ) cars have been pretty decent over the past couple of decades. I rode in a 2023 (?) Lada Largus not long ago, and that's like cheapest model, and to me seemed no different from any random modern European car. They produce higher-end ditto that unfortunately are kind of hard to come by these days. The Vesta Cross and X-Ray (?) did show up in Germany occasionally before 2022, and were fine.
