Health issues and death
In September 2008, Jackson was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after experiencing dehydration and stomach pains. Doctors diagnosed him with viral gastroenteritis.[386][387] In November 2017, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.[388] In August 2021, he and his wife were hospitalized with COVID-19 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.[389][390] On August 27, it was reported that he had been transferred to a rehabilitation facility, while his wife had been moved to the intensive care unit.[391]She was released from the hospital on September 4, while Jackson continued to receive care for Parkinson's.[392]
On November 12, 2025, Jackson was hospitalized in Chicago after experiencing a high pulse and what was described as a "rattle in his chest".[393] He was hospitalized again the following day at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for an issue related to a "rare neurological disorder".[394] That day, it was disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) in April 2025.[395][396][397] He used a wheelchair and required in-home health-care assistance.[394] His medical condition was reported to have been neurodegenerative since 2024.[396][398] As of November 16, he was no longer receiving medication to raise his blood pressure, which was considered a form of life support.[399] He was reported to be in stable condition and breathing on his own.[398][399] On November 17, he was transferred out of Northwestern Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit.[400][401] He was released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital on November 24; among those who visited him during his stay were Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al Sharpton, and Greg Mathis.[397][402][403] In December, his family announced that he was spending time in an acute nursing facility but remained in stable condition and was expected to return home soon.[404][405] He was discharged from the facility on December 22.[406]
