In 1953, the Argentine army evidenced a requirement for a rifles that would replace its Mauser mod. 1909-Hence DGFM built prototypes of the M1 Garand, the STG 43 and the Johnson rifle (the latter at the IAME) F Eventually, the FAL was selected in 1955, and license production began in 1959

In 1953, the Argentine army search for a replacement for its Mauser mod. 1909s. Accordingly, DGFM built prototypes of an M1 in 7,65mm the STG 43, and IAME a Johnson rifle. In 1955, the army purchased 11.000 FALs and in 1959 began production under license from FN.

Yes and Argentine soldiers were still armed with Fabrique Nationale Fusile Automatic Leger when they invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982. Argentine commandos were armed with silenced Sterling submachineguns.
 
The rifles employed in the Malvinas were manufactured by DGFM, as were the FAPs, PAM-1, 105 m. recoilless rifles, mortars, and the 155 L.33 mod. 19776 CITER howitzers.
