Looking for information on the squadron that operated P-39 Airacobra's as an aggressor type of unit during World War II. Here are some pictures of the squadron's aircraft. From what I was able to find, one of the aircraft was involved in a landing accident at Santa Rosa Air Field, CA while flying with the 392nd Fighter Squadron. However, I do not know if the 392nd FS was operating this aircraft while it was being used as an aggressor or if it was associated with a different squadron entirely (i.e. transferred to another unit). The "Z" on the nose usually designates a fuselage code for the based-air field, however, "Z" was used for the Thomasville Army Air Field in Georgia. Any ideas where these aggressors were based or what squadron they were with?
An interesting note: The 392nd FS was based for a short time at Tonopah Army Air Field flying the P-39 for air-to-air gunnery training, which if this was the unit flying these aggressor P-39s, then it was foretelling of the future that Tonopah would play in foreign tactics and dissimilar training.
