According to its inventor, the PistonJet II "was conceived as a sport for people who want to fly a jet aircraft, but do not have the finances". It uses Chevrolet LS6 drive fans (ducted fans) and is being built in Volgograd. It would seem the first PistonJet was already flown at Oshkosh.

Takeoff speed: 150-160 (kms/h, presumably, although it really isn't much...)
Takeoff weight: 1000 kgs (1 ton)
Fuel capacity: 280 liters
Flight range: 1,500 km
Overload: 6 / -4

A modern successor to the Ric-Jet 4 from 1977 ?
But indeed much better looking.

It kind of reminds me of the RANS prototype that crashed. The one that was designed to look like a modern fighter, but used a standard nose mounted piston.

It's the Marganski Bielik from Poland, see http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8552.0/highlight,bielik.html .

The main point of the PistonJet II is its impeller propulsion, I think,
which gives it a real jet-like appearance. Are there any other benefits
of this system, others than those interesting for many RC-modelers, too ?

Aerodynamically there is no benefit.

All what this type of configuration does is warm up the little birds, as my thermodynamics professor used to say. Lots of air flowing against lots of surface, very inefficient.

This subject of ducted fans was discussed not long ago: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,4015.0.html

PS: The Cobalt is different, it is a classic canard pusher.

Around the theme - the projects of the Ukrainian firm OKB-AON

no one heard about the german fan-jet and fan-trainer airplanes?

new website (in german): http://www.sattlerundpartner.de/fantrainer/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=54&lang=de

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein-Flugzeugbau_Fantrainer_400/600

I hope it is ok to embed a pic from wikipedia:

The link I gave two posts above yours was discussing the fantrainer with some unique photos.

But this is a real military trainer aircraft powered by a turboshaft, we are not talking poor man's jet here anymore.
