The lamprey UUV and the idea of a relatively small ‘AWACS’ drone got me wondering if we might be able to get some savings on lower end ships by building say 30 frigates but 15-20 detachable sonar systems and some sort of radar drone each. The ships that are in maintenance periods have 0 need for sonar or radar beyond navigation, so after a deployment the sensor drones are removed, and given to ship coming out of maintenance.
Having them be detachable means you’re not giving away the ship’s exact position when pinging or radiating.
The fuel for the sonar would be the hardest part, but maybe just have it be electric, have it attach to a certain point that acts like one of those wireless phone charging stations?
