PLA 2013- 1x Mil-26 w/ 2 new light tanks (flying clean) + 4x Mil-8 Hip mounting plenty-o-rockets & HMG turret each internally (flying clean) two 8x8 armored ATVs each w/ autocannon/HMG mounts & other mounts as well as a squad (in which each dismount would now essentially perform as a low cost grenadier.. barrel fired and/or underbarrel fired) essentially a Mech/Armor Air Assault genuine Grenadier Platoon

US Army 20??- CH-47 sling load JTLV a potential future quote-- 'hypothetically we can sling a JTLV for some distance..'

Whoa - what variant of the Mi-8 carries an HMG turret? Out of the five flexible gun positions on the Mi-8, only one type of door gun can carry a 12.7mm... (to the best of my knowledge)

how about full autocannons... "Mi-17: A mid-life upgrade"

"The helicopter carries four UPK-23-250 gun containers with GSh-23L 23mm guns and pivoted mounts (eight units). The forward and aft hemispheres are protected by PKT machine-guns with independent power supply and remote control circuits."

"In 2001, the Army Aviation introduced the new Mi-17-V5 transport helicopter (S/N LH917xx, 927XX, 937XX/7xx, 947xx, 977xx). This variant features a solid nose, two TV3-117VM engines (max power 2,200hp) and a hydraulically operated loading ramp. The two sliding doors on both sides of the cabin are also enlarged for quick troop disembarkation. Some specifications: max TO weight 13,000kg, max internal load 4,000kg, max external load 4,500kg, cruise speed 230km/h, range 715km, hover ceiling 3,980m (no ground effect). All were imported from Russia via China United Airline for "civilian purpose". 25 more were imported in 2003-04 as the improved Mi-17-V7s with the more powerful VK-2500 engines (max power 2,400hp). They are mainly used for high altitude and VIP missions in Tibet and Xinjiang replacing the old S-70Cs (S/N LH927xx, 937xx, 947xx). Like Mi-171, some have been fitted with external pylons to carry rocket launchers and fuel tanks (attached to the outside of the cabin wall). Others were modified with an IRST turret mounted under the cabin and a search light for all-weather SAR missions. Their pilots are equipped with NVGs. A small number of Mi-17-V7s are also in service with PLAAF (S/N 11x5x) for SAR purpose. They have been upgraded with a navigational antenna (GPS/Beidou?) installed on top of the tail boom as well as a terrain following radar (?) mounted under the nose. Some Mi-17-V5s have been upgraded with laser and radar warning sensors mounted on both sides of the nose. Recent images indicated some are able to carry up to 8 KD-9 ATMs for attack role.

Mil-171sh combat transports have nose mounts for 7.62mm PK series MGs.. new more compact Russian 12.7mm HMGs would fit in that housing. likewise the door gunner position can support 12.7mm HMGs able to fire forward in limited arc..

The pivoted mounts are probably the window mounts for PK machine guns? The UPK-23-250 is a fixed forward firing gun pod.

This is very interesting! I'll have to do some research - thanks.

So far the only turreted armament on the Mi-8 series I am aware of is the 14.5mm armed Berkut-M26 system.

Those sources say that it's predecessor was drawn from the GUV-8700 pod's armament - the GSh-G they say could potentially take out Manpads...

I wonder why anyone would want to do so with an elegantly simple combat helicopter like the Mi-8/17. To my knowledge no Tier 1 nation like Russia, China, Europe or the US has elected to go to a turret system on assault helicopters, beyond for technical exploration. Even the effort to do so with the MV-22 appears to have come up short. Has any country signed on for the Battlehawk or the Israeli equivalent? Even the pictures I have seen of the V-280 concept from Bell/Lockheed appears to show standard door guns. While there is no doubt that it is feasible to do so, I think the weight and cost penalty have precluded their "buying their way onto the aircraft".

Well, all of the post-Afghanistan Mil transport designs prior to the Mi-42 and the Mi-54 had rear guns for suppressing attackers while the helicopter retreated. They even tried fitting one to the Mi-24...

Thank you CostasTT...had no idea..mightly massives though yes..

the Mil Helicopters (Russian: Миль) engineers most likely have looked at supporting larger 23mm /30mm autocannons underneath as well as a reducing the size of 12.7mm /14.5mm turrets which Mil customers might seek by this time..
