McDonnell-Douglas Model 225 VFX (F-14 alternative)

Undoubtedly a dream find for any MDD 225 lover with a knack for 3D recreations... Anyone out there?

1969 Artist's Concept of F-14A for U.S. Navy-Wire Photo found on eBay.

Seller's description:
This photo comes from a vast archive of Original AP, UPI and various other news service photos.

Wire Photo. 10x8. 1/14/1969. Washington, DC. Artist's concept of the Navy's new supersonic, carrier-based fighter, the F-14A. Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. has been selected as prime contractor. The F-14A will be a two-place aircraft with tandem seating and will be equipped with Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-12 afterburning turbofan engines. Present plans call for first flight in early 1971 and operation with the fleet in 1973.

Nice pic of McDonnell-Douglas's Model 225. This might be the source of the mysterious attribution of this as Grumman's design.

The picture I posted as MDD 225 was taken from Japanese magazine AIREVIEW March 1969, but erroneously captioned "winning design of F-14A by Grumman".
On the next issue, the mock up photos of the real Grumman design was published but still saying that "the rendering of the last month issue was one of the designs studied by Grumman but the mock up shows the final design."
Cheers,

EEP1A

Thank you Triton and OVERSCAN. Now I understand why a Japanese magazine editor made an error in his caption. The description on this Wire Photo is not wrong, but strongly misleading.

Greetings All -

A "new" batch of photos were acquired by the Museum recently and amongst them was this line drawing of what appears to be a recce version of the Model 225.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Another flood of pictures of the McDonnell Model 225 rib model. We are moving the model to a different display area and will try cleaning it and tightening some of the loose screws. With the model down on a table I was able to focus on the articulated details on the model. 23 pictures total sent in three batches.

Here is a color photo of the original artwork used on the SAC document for the McDonnell 225 (see reply no.134 on this thread). Also, I am looking for a factory display or proposal model of this airplane, if anybody has a spare they can part with. I know of at least three in existence, so there must be more in somebody's closet! Thank you!

Seems expensive for a reasonably small and crude model, but I guess its worth what someone will pay.

It might be something like these deck spotting models - size and level of detail is comparable I think. This model for sale has folding tailplanes I think?

It looks to me like the aft part of the stabilators folds to reduce overall length for deck parking.

Yep - but none of the drawings we have seem to have that feature so presumably it was dropped.

Some early Grumman 303 variants had folding stabilators, too. The feature must have fallen out during the cost:benefit trade studies.

My impression (but I could be wrong) is that these were simply a decorative addition to use as a stand for vertical display.

Photo recon version of MD 225.

It's interesting that the first image shows the Model 225 landing on a Forrestal-class CV, i.e. USS Independence.

Good Day All -

A recent treasure trove of a donation from a retired McAir engineer has a folder full of Model 225 wind tunnel images. This one is interesting as it appears to be a very early iteration with a F-4 Phantom style intake instead of the proposed production type intake (F-15 type layout). The forward fuselage looks to me to be far more like the Phantom as well. No date on the photo but interestingly credited to the Douglas - El Segundo Aerophysics Laboratory.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Here's the SAC for the Model 225A pulled from the Performance volume of the proposal.

Might seem like a dumb question, with an obvious answer, but can I ask what SAC stands for in your reference to the above
SAC document for the McDonnell 225
please?

It might be Strategic Air Command, or some other command that I have never heard of.

SAC in this context means Standard Aircraft Characteristics. It's a list of dimensions, weights, and performance values.

Thanks for that TomS, I stand corrected.
