McDonnell 261 MORASS and 266 SASS airbreathing missiles

Since 1972, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) participated in several airbreathing missile research programs. These programs included the MORASS, ALRAAM, SASS, AIAAM, and the ASALM configurations. The results from these studies indicated that a more comprehensive data base would be required to advance and develop new design techniques for airbreathing missile configurations.

In 1977, Langley Research Center developed a parametric model series that could be configured to cover a wide range of airbreathing missile configurations (figure 1). The model components, shown schematically in figure 1, included single and twin axisymmetric and two-dimensional inlets. The twin-inlets could be rotated about half the body centerline from 0° to 45° from horizontal. Various wing and tail configurations could be installed.

This model series was tested with internal flow in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel in Hampton, Virginia, and in the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center (DTNSRDC) 7' x 10' Transonic Tunnel without internal flow. A series of tests at both Langley and DTNSRDC were run with single tail surfaces deflected for pitch, yaw and roll control.

The ASALM program apparently involved Martin, while MORASS (MOdern RAmjet System Synthesis) in 1972-73 and SASS (Small Air-breather System Synthesis) in 1974-75 involved McDonnell (these being the Models 261 and 266). 1/4 scale models were tested by NASA respectively as Project 1009 and Project 1110.


NOTE: Strangely enough, NASA's CRGIS website, which provides a photo gallery of 1/4 scale MORASS and SASS model tests, features them in a "More Asset Model Photos" section, although the ASSET program (McDonnell 151) was of a totally different nature and took place over a decade before...

SASS studied several smaller ramjet missile concepts for the Navy including Air Intercept Air-to-Air Missile (AIAAM).
