Over two decades at MIT, Hamilton forged new paths in computer science and engineering. Her groundbreaking work included leading the team that programmed the first computers that took humans to the moon.

Margaret Hamilton has died. Absolute legend, it was my honour to meet her and have a conversation with her just a few years ago, super nice and still sharp. Ave atque vale Margaret.

We are saddened by the passing of pioneering computer scientist and software engineer Margaret Hamilton. As leader of the team that developed the onboard flight software for the Apollo missions, Hamilton helped make Apollo 11’s historic journey to the Moon possible. Her team’s innovative work helped guide the mission safely to the lunar surface and forever changed the fields of computing and spaceflight.

In 2025, the Museum awarded Hamilton the Michael Collins Trophy for Lifetime Achievement to recognize her remarkable body of work: https://s.si.edu/4zrbl0m

Most people don't realise how many important contributions she made to computer science and to computer programming with her coining the term "Software Engineering" for example and she was a critical developer of software for the AGC.

I wonder if the Apollo11Space YouTube channel will do a video about her?
