Lancet drone and the unmanned flying vehicle

This article divided into two chapters.

On the Russian Ukrainian battlefield, the Lancet suicide drone is a star weapon. It destroys several expensive Western weapons, including the Panther 2 tank, Bradley armoured transport vehicle, M777 howitzer, French Caesar artillery, Polish Crab self-propelled artillery, and anti-aircraft missile launcher.



The Lancet is a suicide drone that can fly for a long time in search mode in a predetermined area . When a target is discovered, this unmanned UAV strikes it like an "air to ground" missile, the suicide drone also being destroyed itself.
The Lancet drone used to strike ground and air targets, as well as perform reconnaissance missions.

The Lancet carries tactical ammunition, wings made of plastic and carbon fiber. It has a flight altitude of 500 to 5000 meters, a flight time of 40 to 60 minutes, a range of 40 kilometers, a maximum takeoff weight of 12 kilograms, a payload warhead of 3 kilograms for the Lancet 1 , and 7 kilograms for the Lancet 3 .

The speed is 70 miles per hour.

Using an electric motor as power unit, equipped with anti laser protection, installed with a thermal imager, camera, gas analyzer, alarm system, laser target indicator, and airspeed meter.

Remote control of flight and photoelectric aiming through television. Due to installation of optical and thermal imaging equipment, drones can work at night without satellite navigation . It self detect and attack targets.

The drone reaches designated airspace and hover for 15 to 20 minutes to find suitable targets. The electric motor of the Lancet much quieter than an internal combustion engine powered drone, and usually the enemy cannot detect it.

Due to low heat of the electric motor, it cannot attract the attention of enemy infrared observation devices.

Honest, Lancet drone is a weapon with excellent design philosophy , high cost-effectiveness. The price of a drone only around $40000, a Leopard 2 tank is worth $8 million, an M777 howitzer is worth $700000, and a Bradley infantry tank three million dollars per vehicle.

But Lancet drone still has some flaws,

Point 1 The Lancet is a disposable weapon ,it completely destroyed when it hits a target. It's engine, thermal imaging device, fuselage, camera, gas analyzer, laser target indicator, and airspeed meter cannot be used again to attack enemies.
If Drones can be reused, greatly reducing the cost of weapon .

Point 2 Lancet drone requires a launch device to take off, and it cannot take off and land vertically,

3 The flying altitude of Lancet usually between 500 to 5000 meters in the air, which means it can be detected by radar and intercepted by anti-aircraft artillery and missiles.(In fact , Lancet drone too small is difficult to be intercepted)

4 The Lancet drone requires a operator to transmit radio signals from a long distance for control, making it susceptible to electronic interference from the enemy..
5 The charge of the warheads too small, Lancet 3 drone only has 7 kilograms of explosives, which cannot penetrate the tank's frontal armor.

so, I design a new style UAV able cover some flaw of lancet UAV , I call the drone ”locust" unmanned flying vehicle. you can call it a UAV or a drone, but I prefer call it unmanned flying vehicle.

it has the capability search and attack tanks ,armor vehicle of enemy autonomously. "locust drone lay on the ground like a landmine ,but it is not a landmine. "locust" drone is a combination a unmanned flying vehicle and a bomb. "locust" flying vehicle able manufacture a lot of them by low cost . A large quantities. Unlike a suicide drone. It reused and reload a bomb.


The locust stay on the ground of forest,grassland and marsh, waylay the armor vehicle and infantry. Like its name, the fly vehicle carry a disc bomb fly short distance,search and attack target, no need a operator.

Parameter: maximum flying distance 8 kilometers,range from target 50 meters to 8000 meters. Flight height 5 meters to 100 meters. Flying at 50 miles an hour.

Below is a sketch of the design of locust, attack mode demonstration.

it consist of a flying vehicle and a disc bomb. The bomb inner packed with 22 pounds of RDX(cyclonite explosive) .

The procedure : tank and armored vehicle make a big noise and shake on the road. As shock sensor of "locust" drone feel the voice and shake on ground. It vertical take-off on grassland near the enemy.Dozens of locusts drone open its infrared detection system and navigation system. The locusts attack enemy tanks and infantry like drone swarm.

locusts has two attack mode : drop mode and lay mode. The disc bomb install a impact trigger fuse under a drop mode. fly on the head of tank drop the bomb.

The disc bomb install a delay detonation fuse under a lay mode . The locust lay a disc bomb on tail surface of tank . or lay down a bomb on top surface of tank. Four suction cups of disc bomb solid adsorption in the tail surface of tank. Unmanned flying vehicle fly away from target quickly, A delay detonation fuse detonate bomb 5 seconds later. Tank destruction.

Mission accomplish, locust UAV recycle and use again. The soldier fill and load a new bomb on UAV. Because UAV control flight by chips. it automatic search and recognition hostile. So no need a operator remotely piloted vehicle ,and hostile must not electronic jamming.

point 2 locust flight height very low, from 5 meters high to 100 meters high , The drone swarm ambush tanks and armor clusters in their path.

They are difficult for enemy anti-aircraft radars to detect. Locusts drone swarm don't need a launching device, they should vertical takeoff and landing.

Point 3 locusts unmanned flying vehicle capable use attack target repeatedly. Greatly reduce the cost of use. The locust system is relatively simple in structure, fewer part,convenient mass production.

In fact ,locust system is a combination a flying vehicle and a disc bomb.

point 4 22 pounds RDX wreck most kinds of heavy tank , like M1A2 tank, ;leopard2 tank ,Challenger tank .

point 5 Although locust UAV flight distance only 8 kilometers, but this range enough attack the military units near it.

That’s my preliminary design ideas and simple thought, personal interest purely, hope other friends give some improvement advise.

You can look up yaga baba drones for drones that drop big warheads, including anti-tank mines.

As for design, there is a good reason for classical airframe designs from strength of material, aerodynamics, agility and the ability to use mass produced parts. You may want to do a study on UAV configurations and think about the tradeoffs first.
 
Why locust has drop mode attack and lay mode attack? Because tank move fast, if unmanned flying vehicle drop the bomb on tank ,perhaps only 30% to 50% hit the target. Drop mode attack just prevent hostile soldiers beside the armor vehicle shoot the drone.



But locust fly more faster than tank drive, it fly 50 miles a hour, it able lay the bomb on tank 100% under lay mode attack.
 
why the unmanned flying vehicle has solar panel? Because it only fly a short distance 8 kilometers when battery is full power.
They fly to other area take another mission and use solar panel charge the battery, like locust swarm migrate.

The merit of locust system it stay on Earth usually, Locust system blend with the objects on ground, it hard to be find by radar in the air.
