I find it extremely difficult to believe that anyone at Ford or GM was not paying attention.

Head of Ford Electronics Integration to company President: "Sir, I have been following recent events and we must find the necessary chip supply within 24 hours."

Ford President: "Not now. I think it can wait."

The reality was profits. Which types of chips were making chip makers the most money? The major automakers had no idea that the technology they were relying on was 'out of date'? No.
