The Indian Naval chief has ruled out the Fire scout as a mere toy. Instead HAL-Navy and IAI are teaming to build a UAV based on the Chetak helicopter.

".. ruled out the Fire scout as a mere toy."

Hm, perhaps it was just compared to a readily available, proven basis, which
maybe even can be taken from old stocks !

I suppose, but in essence a FireScout is just an unmanned Schweizer 330, as much as this is just an unmanned Chetak.

agree with him or not gentlemen . the navy chief was pretty specific.
1. the Fire Scout does not meet our payload requirements (both qualitative and quantitative)
2. The FS may not be the best bet for operations in the vast Indian Ocean and the gut wrenching climatic conditions in the same area.

I have to assume that the Indian Aerospace Industry can build Chetak without any nasty industry deals. They certainly know how to maintain them. Already have all of the components in place to make and service them...Hmmm. Also if you can undercut the FS market by a million or two per copy you are now in the VTOL UAV market without all the political hang ups that tend to go with US products. Teaming with an organization that knows a little about UAV and has a record of working with most anyone with bucks...

Now all you have to do is get a senior leader from a world class navy to say the FS is inadequate for blue water work. Oh! Wait. ;D

I have to admit that this is probably to smart an idea for India to pass up.

The rest of that blogger's brochure is here: http://www.iai.co.il/sip_storage/files/2/36182.pdf

The pdf has a 3-view and specs. It doesn't name the E/O or radar. The latter is the Elta EL/M-2022U -- makes sense since that's what the Heron UAVs have and IN Do-228s are being fitted with the EL/M-2022A (V3).

Rebuilds would make good sense -- after all, those IN Chetak are being replaced by HAL Dhruvs.

the Chetak has of course been license built in the past . An uprated version with the TM 333 2B2 ( smae as Dhruv) engine called Chetan is also available.

In any case here is some more stuff on the NRUAV.

they are all from this source
