GQM-163A Coyote Target Missile

Well, one way to put it is that they wanted the job in the worst way and they achieved their goal.

*sigh*

IIRC, they reportedly underbid the job. And then ran into problems. And didn't have management reserve money to fix them. And then ran into more problems. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Sea-skimming SLAT environment was not the same as for ASALM. Navy Targets requirements for a production end item were different than that of an AF missile R&D program. Martin learned the hard way.

Sounds like Martin-Marietta should've talked to Bendix.

Different safety requirements between programs. Vandal was ground launch only whilst SLAT was launched from manned aircraft. SLAT was intended to be recoverable and reusable (at least for flight test).

Has there been any consideration to fitting the GQM-163 with a Mk-72 launch-booster instead of the Mk-70 so that it can be fired from a ship?

Third time you've asked that in this thread, my dude.

What does that accomplish? Coyote doesn't have much-if-any payload margin. About all you could add to that design would be a full seeker head and if you're lucky 200lbs of warhead.

I had a sneaky feeling that I'd asked that question before, thanks for reminding me:eek:.

While it would carry a small payload and would be of short range it is supersonic so there might be an application there. However I should've been more specific in what I asked, what I meant is it just launched as a decoy for live missile tests since the current version has to be launched from a shore based launch-site that limits it use to places such as Pt. Mugu.

US Navy Supersonic Target History

I was not expecting to see my work posted here. This was a very quick digest I did in order to make a decent use of materials I collected on the GQM-163A/SSST program. I decided that it wouldn't have been all that useful to write solely about GQM-163A without looking at the broader context of what made the target and program so interesting to me. Nonetheless, it was very hard to find a ton of info on BQM-90 and various SLAT competitor systems. I might do a revision of this at some point.
