General Gavin FSW Fake Aircraft

Hi,

After the war, General Gavin wrote in his 1947 book "Airborne Warfare" that we should have light tracked armored personnel carriers and assault gun/recon vehicles that could be parachuted intact, ready-to-fight into battle to be our "Sky Cavalry" to give Paratroopers mobility, protection and firepower.

Saying that something is 'so' does not make it so, a lesson from history repeated many times.

Those sketches resemble the proposed XB-53 bomber.
They also remind us of the XFG-1 experimental, fuel-carrying, glider designed and test flown by Cornelius Aircaft during WW2.l (only 2 prototypes).
Engineer George Cornelius earned patents on a variety of wing configurations, most noteably foward-swept flying wings.
Cornelius’ ideas never entered production, but post-war engineer Marske designed the Pioneer, Monarch and Genesis series of forward-swept, flying wing, recreational sailplanes. They flew well, but were not structurally practical until Marske invented pultruded carbon rods to control wing deflection and departure.

As an aside, General Gavin may have proposed air-transportable, light armoured vehicles - to support prartroopers in battle - but none were ever named after him. A few silly commentators like to refer to the FMC M113 tracked, armoured personnel carrier as “Gavin” but that was never an official US Army term.
