The T-31 project was the last thing John Garand worked on at Springfield, it was a bullpup rifle designed to fire what eventually became the 7.62 standard NATO cartridge. In its initial form it suffered from extreme fouling issues due to it's gas trap operating system and so it was modified to use a more conventional method of operation. The project itself ran from 1948 to 1953 when John Garand retired and it was decided not to continue with the project.
The Forgotten Weapons video linked below notes that there is a lack of documentation on the project. While it's known why the original form of the weapon failed, it's not clear how it performed in its modified form.
