Over the years I have lost both family and friends. This morning my local Charity Shop found this beautifully illustrated book called Ida, always

It tells in pictures the story of a male Polar Bear nursing a sick female. It is naturally sad and tells of the pain of loss. It is based on the true lives of Polars in Zoos in the USA where the story is set.
I have always seen Life as a journey with many stops along the way and often diversions or even paths back. I discovered Polar Bears again (Pipaluk was born in London Zoo when I was a kid) with Antonia (a dwarf Polar at Zoom Gelsenkirchen) during a visit to Germany in Autumn 2006. From then until now they have been a crucial part of my life. For much of the journey my old mother Polar Bear, Ursula, was there for me. Her passing at the end of 2015 reminded me of the tender farewell of a keeper in Leipzig Zoo to his last Polar Bear. With no family, Ursula was my Last Polar Bear.
As I wrote at the top, I have been losing friends and family ever since I was at school when my Father's Mother died. Their faces and stories live with me. We lost a beloved German Shepherd Dog in those early years and have never replaced her. Now as the journey becomes a bit slower and less well organised I am grateful that my senses and memories remain sharp.
