Bernard Decré, who leads the search for "Oiseau Blanc", is searchnig it for several years now. He found many testimonies and evidence of Oiseau Blanc crossing New Foundland sky and probaby crashed near St-Pierre and Miquelon islands.

Just like Everest, if you don't go up and come down, your attempt wasn't a success.
 
That last time I was involved in setting an FAI recognized record (about 1990, ground crew only) there was a requirement for the flight crew to survive at least 48 hours after the landing for the record to become official.
