Below is from a 1998 paper by Dr. Mavris, who is Boeing Professor of Advanced Aerospace Systems Analysis at Georgia Tech.

Basically he adapted the F/A-18C into a single-engine design (the F119 engine of the F-22), with internal weapon bays underbelly, where air intakes were in the original Hornet design.


These changes forced air intakes to move to the top of the aircraft, although the forebody may blank the airflow at high angle of attack.
