If we could get laser efficiency to 80% and rectenna efficiency to 85%, then we could beam electricity over light at slightly under 68% efficiency. Fog, rain, and snow will block the beam, so to make it work, each customer would need to have battery storage. But still, we could get rid of the need to run wires to every single home and business, and instead have structures resembling water towers spaced out by 1 mile each in a grid that would beam to a small receiver on each rooftop.
