As a means of stopping an aircraft after an aborted landing or take-off, tests
were carried out by All American Eingineering Co, using a Convair C-131,
fitted with a modified tail hook from a Douglas AD Skyraider. 21 landings were
made with the hook lowered, 20 of them successful.
(From Aviation Week June 1960, the hook isn't that easily visible, see the
blow-up)

On one landing they didn't catch the wire and made a go-aroung, says the article. In real
life this of course could have ended fatally !
