Plans to build large-scale salmon farms off the coast of the Falkland Islands have triggered a fierce backlash in Argentina, with critics raging at what they regard as “imperialist plunder” and a potential environmental disaster on the scale of Chile’s salmon farming collapse. Unity Marine, a company backed by Danish and British investors, is seeking to establish eight salmon farms between three and seven kilometres off East Falkland.

The operation aims to produce 50,000 tonnes of salmon annually, with the capacity to expand up to 200,000 tonnes. A public consultation on the plans is ongoing and will run until August. While Unity Marine’s director, James Wallace, has defended the initiative as a vital economic boost for the islands, opposition in Argentina is broad and vocal. Environmental groups and officials warn that the farms threaten fragile marine ecosystems across the region, including nearby Tierra del Fuego, where salmon farming was banned in 2021.

Strictly speaking, the Red Tide events that devastated Chilean aquaculture were tied to El Niño, which is a Pacific phenomenon. With huge volumes of turbulent and cold sea water, aquaculture shouldn’t have as much environmental impact in the Falklands as it would in the much warmer Gulf of Mexico, for example. Moreover, there isn’t significant agricultural run off in the Falklands unlike Chile. Also not a lot of sewage either due to the tiny population. In short, the main drives of Red Tide events are absent from the Falklands.

I should point out that Argentinian doesn’t possess a significant fishing fleet as much as a collect licensing fees from Asian fishing fleets operating in their 200 mile EEZ. There is far less concern over fisheries than exploitive rent taking behavior.

An opportunity: build a SpaceX launch/landing platform in the Falklands. use modified Starships to transport processed salmon to customers in Europe, North America, Asia. The launch/landing platforms could be on land... or they could be modified new-build nuclear powered aircraft carriers along the lines of the Ford.

WARING SARCASTIC CONTENT:

Sadly Falklands belong to Little Britain.
since Elon Musk is not on good terms with tiny brother, ehh i mean British Prime Minister.
However the President of Argentina could in Future make huge financial offer to buy Falklands...
...a offer Little Britain can't refuse, since they gone bust.
