Complications from a breakthrough case of Covid-19 apparently. Despite his service as SecState, he was probably best known for his role (while still in the Army as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) in Operation Desert Storm, aka the Liberation of Kuwait in the early 1990s, not to mention the creation of the associated Powell Doctrine.

He seemed to be a man of integrity. The whole 'going into Iraq because of WMDs' is a stain on his record, but to be fair he accepted some of the responsibility for going with it. I can't think of anyone in Washington who would accept some of the blame and risk - by God- being held accountable.
