Looking up on the FB22-1 to FB22-4 design notes and playing around with populating the IWB,
it seems it's necessary to widen the F-22 IWB a bit (~2.4" 60 mm each side) to fit everything:

It's about the same distance needed to vary the placement of racks. The uncertainty lies with actual sizes (as they change from mod to mod etc.).
Again this reinforces my previous conclusion the IWB can't be shorter by much. As is it's a bit shy of 8.5 m. It shouldn't be shorter than 7 m. Looking at the European/Japan designs my guess is theirs are about 7 m, too.

The NGAD program originally in the Congress report referred to the fighter(s) as
in line with the current mission of the F-22 or F-15EX than F-35.
Since then it's been repeatedly said to be primarily air superiority
but also
is to have multi-role capability to be able to go from a high-end conflict all the way down to homeland defense
Basically, it does A2A but also first strike but not CAS.
In the end this means it should be able to mount all weapons but for different missions or (higher value) targets.

Keep in mind besides the B21 it's still the only one and will remain one of the few AC type that will operate in contested areas. All other 4th and 5th gen have to stay 100-200 NM away. So it has to bring along some strike weapons and do work until it's safe for the F35/F15EX to come in.

Since, air launched ballistic missiles has apparently become popular these days I think it's prudent to change the specs for the wing stations a bit. One reason being the F-111 & F-15 that had been used for extra ordinary loads will no longer be available. Future designs will have to take up the slack.

From what I see it seems necessary to raise the load for the inner wing station to at least 7500 lb (see Blue Arrow & anti-satellite weapons).
I'm not sold on that.

Remember that F-15EXs will be available in small numbers (~100) as well as however many F-47s get built. And we all know that you can handily zoom-climb with an F-15, plus the old ASM-135 was only 2600lbs. The AIM-174B has some significant ALBM use as well, and only weights ~2000lbs. Including booster, the SM3 is ~3000lbs.

Plus, a 600gal fuel tank weighs some 5000lbs as is. ~4020lbs of fuel and a bit over 1000lbs of tank.



The outer most 5 & 6 wing station will only have deal with "missiles", preferable the MALD decoys. Best would be a triple rack so they can be launched on mass before entering the combat area, then the pylons would be ejected for a clean stealth profile.
Disagree about type of pylon. You're going to need something akin to the Boeing Enclosed Weapons Pod to carry things, and then you can decide about punching the entire pod to further clean up the RCS.

Because otherwise you're talking about having a huge RCS from the pylons and MALDs hanging from them. I think the EWP could physically fit 4x MALDs, 2 on the doors and 2 on the bay. Or you just add a couple inches in the middle and make a new EWP around holding 4x MALDs.



That said I doubt the F-47 will go Mach 3 because:
1. that's thee mission the SR-72 was made to do
2. the aircraft would need engines in the 50-55k lb class
3. the necessary form isn't suitable for dogfights unless the USAF gives up on this requirement
4. don't forget the cooling!
You definitely do not need 50-55klbs engines to go Mach 3. Blackbird J58s were only 35k static thrust.

Well, fortunately, 1000lb bombs have about the same "box factor" as AMRAAMs. 1000lb bombs are a little shorter than an AMRAAM, but are about the same width. So a bay that can hold an AMRAAM can hold a 1000lb bomb, this has been demonstrated with F-22s.

If the USAF or Boeing was thinking, they'd have made the bays deep enough that you could stuff a 2000lb weapon in there. ~25" deep, not 19". Also, 25" deep bays are deep enough to double-stack AMRAAMs with some staggering so that the fin volume overlaps. You can even fit 4x AMRAAMs on a rack into a 25x25" square. Instead of a single row of 6x AMRAAMs like the F-22 carries, you could stuff 12x AMRAAMs into a bay only 6" deeper and 3" wider. Or, 2x 2000lb weapons plus 4x AMRAAMs, if you're doing some bunker busting.

But I suspect that the only 6th gen fighter airframe designed around hauling 2000lb bombs internally was the FAXX, not the F-47.

I really hope that the USAF is a bit smarter than that. There is nothing wrong with futureproofing your design by giving it a bay which will accomodate larger munitions than you already have.
I'm not saying it needs to carry an SM-6 inside, but limiting yourself to the AMRAAM form factor is a good way to get locked into it.
 
My own intuition is something closer to the J-36... but if you are going for a more classic air-dominance or penetrating counter air approach - than shallow weapon bays may make a lot more sense. For stand off attacks one could release the SM-6 class missile from a drone and then designate it.

The exception is if you are also using it for SEAD/DEAD operations - in which case one may want the firing platform and the acquisition platform to be one and the same (hard wiring avoiding any risk of jamming) and may want internally carried munitions with very high kinematic performance and decent warheads.

That said, having relatively large bays (Su-57 style) could allow for more growth potential (e.g. higher diametre missiles with better sensors to deal with stealthier or more sophisticated opponents).

This is a capability option it doesn't mean they all or always have to mount such a weapon. It's there to have it and not having to use it rather than not having it and needing it.
Until now the (smaller) ballistic missiles were used for target practice. But moving forward it'll be more common and with the larger type: for example, it could be used for emergency ABM defence shifting of ammo or reinforcement from coast to coast or toward Hawaii.

Well, (5000 lb/2268 kg) that's the station rated load (with unknown leeway amount, assuming safety limit is 2x) actual ordnance is only a fraction.
The pylon with rack is almost 400 lb already, the tank itself should be around 300-400 lb, too.

Good point. The pods would provide better drag but not really needed per se. My vision is to shoot them off before getting into detection range. The MALD has a range of 900 km and meant to be sacrified and soak up AAA munitions. So firing from a distance is no issue.
An alternative would be to use the Flying Missile Rail (FMR) to carry the MALD away first and increase the range further.

You are forgetting drag. The Blackbird is much sleeker. Assuming the F47 won't have worse drag than the F22.
The F22 gets to about M1.9 at 100% (26000 lb each engine).
Using drag equation : to get to M3 you need (3/1.9)^2 = 2.49x the power or 64812 lb on each engine.
My estimate was generous for a much better F47.

Let's be more nerdy and picky.
Lets say we want to reach M3 with 35000 lb engine power. How high does it need to be for air density to offset the required power?
We also assume the engine's power won't drop with altitude!
At altitude (FL350) we got a desnity of 0.28 kg/m^3. So we need the density to drop by 2.49/(35/26)=1.8497x.
or to a desnity of 0.28/1.8497=0.151376 kg/m^3
density at FL470 is about 0.152 kg/m^3
With a max. service ceiling of more than 65000 ft the F22 should be able to do it but obviously that's not the case.

The F22's IWB is already ~34" deep. It's just that airframe rips protrude ~2-4" into the bay and depending on the type of racks needed it's futher cut short by another 7-12". The rips probably double as sound proofing.

1000 lb isn't usefull for valued targets. The israelis dropped almost always 2000 lb on the buildings in gaza.
Apparently, the FB-22-2 was meant to have a 5000 lb load on a new centerline station with 2x 2000 lb to the sides.

If you refer to how the F23 was meant to have those industrial assembly line like chain racks (akin to tank automated ammo loading systems). I honestly have some doubts. For one how do you attach their I/O cable links? They would need to be moved to the rear or so. They also depend on tension in the chains which means regular maintenance etc. We have to have faith they won't dislocate at high g's or do rattle too much when the bay is open.
Using that system also is counter to them being able to be ejected literally rather than dropped. Meaning you would only be able to drop when stable and level not while maneuvering. The F22 was meant to be able to fire while on the back here.

The only viable solution for stacking is using containers and angling them for shooting out. This adds more mechanics. I imagine this would be used for smaller kind of ordnances like the Miniature Hit-to-Kill self-defense missiles.

The F-35's projected undetactable stealth life time had run out since 2023/24.
It's still "safe" because the systems able to detect it aren't widespread yet. But the technological timelime for its stealth life time has run out is a fact. It's beyond the scope of this post to go into details any further.

Besides that new galium based radar antenna elements increased detection range by 2x (regardless of other improved means to detect stealth). This means the F22 would be detected at 20-30 NM instead of previously 10-15 NM and the F35 ~50NM. So considering a safety margine of 2x that's 50-100 NM for them.

With the F15s even further back the AIM154 won't be that much helpful to the F47/B21. They will be just barrier defense.

Based on the constrains I originally thought a 300 mm diameter airframe would be the most that could be accomodated.
But now it's clear to me only 10" is the only choice for big missiles. More is simply not practical nor convenient for rocktry specific sizing.
Anything bigger has to be external. Hence, my bet for Long-Range Engagement Weapon (LREW) as shown.

For kicking the door some SEAD/DEAD is needed. At least getting rid of the most dangerous and long range ones.
The AARGM-ER is fire and forget. So that shouldn't be a problem to just drop them. Maybe they could be pre-fed with GPS data.

Mach 3 places crazy demands on materials - things like Ti alloys and active cooling. A top speed around 2.75 Mach would be the upper limit in my opinion.
Yep, the reason the production F22 was limited to less than F15 speed is heat damage to its skin.
And because of the selling ban they couldn't use better materials from the European patent holders (otherwise they would have the right to it).

Certainly, but the IWB is only has ~37.5" wide of useable space so you wouldn't be able to fit 3 side by side even with folded wings.
Considering 1" space for folded wings on the sides a third missile would have at most ~7.5" of space. If a CUDA is indeed ~7.33" in my estimate we are still good.
Besides that missile's size metric tells me it's not an ideal missile performance design.
 
For fun let's do a cavalry charge simulation to determine how many missile and what type are needed at minimum for a run.
It's just a charge at altitude (FL360), no fancy maneuvering.
The target is a patrol flying at Mach 1, no mauevering, no countering, and undying. A simple turkey gallery shootout with single shots no fancy rippling etc.
Also it's a head-on engagement meaning the approach speed is that of the shooter (Mach 2) and target (Mach 1 =600 kts) combined. I'm rounding numbers a bit for convenience.
Our missile choices are AIM-260 Mach 5 (2900 kts -> 3500 kts approach) 120NM; AIM-120D-3 Mach 4 (2300 kts -> 2900 kts approach) 90NM. We will ignore reaction time, no delays, acceleration time and climb time, mauneuvering etc. just straight laser focussed shots.
Our first shot is obviously at 120 NM, hence, the starting point.
I've made this graph for visualization and as a tool for counting without having to think.

For a Mach 2 charge we get 2x AIM-260 and 4x AIM-120D3 shots off before reaching minimum distance.
I expect this to double for a Mach 1 charge.

I was actually picturing a rack like the one that showed up in the old Testor's YF-23 kit, which is a double T type. Missiles attach on the sides of the rack and are dropped. Upper T is a little wider than lower T, maybe an inch or two, so the upper missiles have space to drop clear of the lower connections. This isn't the Apache-style rack where you have rails to deal with, it's like mounting missiles on wingtips.

If you have to, you can make the entire rack a trapeze and swing it out into the airstream, but I'd prefer not to if I can avoid it.

Yes, but back then the USAF used to drop or rather send 3 sorties for the same target. Today, dropping two is the rule. The key difference is more about confidence in precision. But yeah one-shotting is best.

I think I saw that somewhere. Well, that was probably more artistic liberty than real.
I would imagine some slanted arrangement or better yet a shiveling rack. That could make use of the free side's top volume above the door's mechanics.

As you can see despite firing earlier there's virtually no difference in missiles spent (2 AIM260+3 AIM120).

ATACMS is ~3400lbs. PRSM is smaller so should be lighter.

So unless you're wanting to carry multiple ALBMs per pylon like a B-52, I still don't see the need to have a 7500lb pylon capacity.

The USAF has never shown an F-22 with a 2000lb weapon in the bay. They've flown with 1000lb JDAMs, with SDBs, but not a single Mk84/BLU109. (Quite a few photos of SDBs+1000lb and a pair of AMRAAMs in the bay)

And that includes combat ops over Syria.

Which better materials?
Axit sulfuric /j4f

European doesn't have the capacity to support the F-22 production nor can they compete with Japanese manufacturers who can provide 99.9% of the quality and actually manage to supply in large quantities the stuff we're talking about. Ask Huawei for the receipts and inquire about why they left domestic corps for Nippon - QA goes a long way if you want to compete but spirit and discipline can't be change overnight.
 
Both the MiG-25 and XB-70 (and likely others) did it with stainless steel.
Maybe 2 or 3 minutes at Mach 3 the F47 could handle as an escape dash,before the heat build up starts to warp your canopy.
 
So here is the V2 with wing lengthened, leading edge angle increased.
The canard had to be shortened, maintaining planform design. With TVC nozzles, big canards may not be required.
I made the nose narrower, triangular to lessen drag & RCS.
Comparison with V1 is also shown.
The day i'll get a light weight, old, stable version of some 3D CAD S/w for my old laptop, i'll start translating these into 3D.
Feedbacks are welcome, i'm making a V3 also.

This IWB allows for a variety of configurations. One of the most interesting is probably this... The two 500 lb JDAMs would determine the required total length of the bay.
With 4x GBU-53 but only one GBU-38 in the middle the total length required is reduced to the standard 4x AIM-120 arrangment (3960 mm).

Yep, I had the same thougts for the missile as that's already in use with the F35. I was just wondering if there's a more compact solution.
Like a dual mount on a hexagonal/polygonal like rack that shivels.

Anyhow, Boeing has a shiveling pylon, likely that new pylon that can mount anytype of stores.

Maybe, if hard pressed certainly but that would put it out of service until the ground crew gets its skin fixed. It might not reflect well on the pilot's record.
While others are making exceptional shiny futuristic 3D models, i've to satisfy myself with 2D drawings. :D
So here is V3a & 3b of F-22 based prototype with Lambda wing getting popular & nose triangular & double delta.
Despite some people's believe the Lambda form has been around for at least almost a century. And ofc in some old medias, too.

Here is my solution, if accommodation of 2000 lb JDAM is a requirement. It avoids a complex mechanism and is the most compact arrangement I can come up with...

Did you use some tool to make this drawing?
It has sufficient width for 3 AAMs.
It is similar to F-35's IWB. They're also planning to upgrade to 6 AAMs.

As we can see, there are some concerns regarding weapons release.

> Bombs are heavy, need stability to be dropped vertically.
> BVR-AAMs might need to be launched while maneuvering, means some tilt in roll axis. The 1st few launches could be stable assuming no detection yet.
> The F-35 door launcher ejects the AAM at an angle, not vertical. There're YouTube videos also.
> The airframe mounted AAM launcher might need to be like that of F-22, like a pantograph, which is said to punch out the AAMs with force of 40 Gs, to avoid collision.

there have been advances in active flow control for weapons release from IWB. Some even from Boeing ;)

The tool is called Solid Works.

Ejection envelope needs to be considered of course. Obviously the design of the F-35's missile/bomb launchers is newer and I consider it sufficient for safe ejection*. Also Boeing doesn't refer to a "F-22 type ejector" in its patent for Enclosed Weapons Pods (US 9,180,967 B2). But missile/bomb loading in such a deep bay may be indeed an issue, or at least cause headache for ground crews.

However, this IWB and the corresponding aircraft are conceptual designs and only explore feasibility without going too deep into design details ;)

The same ones NASA had to recruit the ESA to work on the X-38 in 1995-2002. The same time period ;)
You can read the details on the engineering publication on the F22 at JSTOR.

Would it be applicable? And it's not like the UK denied all help on the F-22 (BAE). Why make the exception here?

Addendum. I posted somewhere something by someone arguing that future fighters should be two-seaters because they needed that second seat for a mission-specialist officer the handle the firehose of incoming information and the pack of CCAs. The alternative is that the 'quarterback' function of the 6th generation fighter means that the 'pilot' is actually the weapon systems officer and all the usual 'mundane' piloting duties are done by AI.

9. Single-seat WSO rather than single-seat pilot...

That is my assumption as well. The same agent that handles CCAs can be installed in the manned aircraft and engaged when the pilot/WSO is heavily tasked with organizational decisions.
