I thought folks might be interested in the 3 images I’m pleased to say, I’ve now been able to identify.
They were 3 individual pages, from the (by then) Westland owned, Bristol Helicopter Division’s Type 193 brochure: BHD 111, of approx. 1959-61.
Westland had taken on the Bristol Helicopter interests in March 1960, as they were particularly keen to take advantage of the development work Bristol had achieved in twin rotor design, under Raoul Hafner.
Hafner’s twin rotor Type 173 was only ever a technology demonstrator. It’s subsequent embracing as a design to be evolved into Service use, was driven as much by the conflicting timescales to build a new design from scratch, as it was the cautious evolution of the then new helicopter technologies.
It’s sadly overlooked that the designers behind the Bristol Type 192/Belvedere, always saw that aircraft as an interim design, taking advantage of the 173 development, but again being constrained by it being an evolution of the 173, as compared to a wholly new design.
Their efforts to present the ‘finished article’ aircraft, saw derivations of the 192- be that the 192D with rear tailgate or the 192C Belvedere Mk.2, which had a redesigned centre fuselage. Both designs had level undercarriage.
Concurrent with these evolutionary designs, they were also projecting wholly new types, such as the larger Type 194 and this Type 193.
It is not to be confused with the earlier Bristol Type 193, ordered for the RCN, which was an Anti-submarine Twin Rotor, approximately equivalent to the Royal Navy’s Type 191. Ordered in 1954, The initial Type 193 would’ve seen a small number built in Britain(Oldmixon), the bulk of the order at Bristol’s Canadian factory. The 191 & 193 orders were however cancelled in very late 1955/January 1956.
It’s interesting to see that this 2nd Type 193 design embrace’s civil, RAF/Army as well as Naval usage.
Very sadly, I do not have the whole brochure only these images but, by comparing with other complete brochures and material, I think it’s safe to say these are indeed images of the not very often seen second iteration of the Type 193!
Does anyone else have any other images of the 2nd iteration Type 193 I wonder, or even a copy of the BHD 111 brochure?
