It seems that Amazon just don’t get Bond. TBH if this article is to at all accurate I don’t blame her being exasperated by their suggestions and attitude.

According to the report, Broccoli believes that she “can hold Bond hostage from Amazon for as long as she sees fit” and doesn’t see the studio as a good fit for Bond. “Don’t have temporary people make permanent decisions,” Broccoli is quoted as saying, a line previously used by her father.

The Journal also reports that a source close to Broccoli has also reportedly called Amazon “f***ing idiots” and has pushed back on their ideas to expand the Bond universe with TV shows, spin-offs and even a female 007, telling them “Did you read the contract?”

As someone who grew up with the Bond franchise following BBC TV's Dr Who in having new actors playing the title character I am both cumdgeonly and relaxed about it.

As with much else the earlier films and actors suit me better than the later ones. But I am no longer the target audience.

The original books are so steeped in the world of the late 1950s and early 1960s that Bond is as much a period piece as Miss Marple or Poirot.

But films and books are not documentaries. Sherlock Holmes has survived numerous variations. The original Conan Doyle stories remain for those who enjoy the period flavour.

I think neither side in this will want to give ground. I imagine she’s more than happy not to proceed with anything if Amazon are going to be like this, and they probably think they can wait her out. All that will probably happen is Bond ends up going on a lengthy hiatus like Doctor Who did in the late eighties.

This is one of those where I may be Team Meteor. Sure studio people are more often than not idiots, but people who've worked with her are often none too glowing in their praise for her. While Craig, who wasn't unknown before being cast and it's odd she would claim that, turned out to be quite excellent himself, his films ended up having as many clunkers as classics mostly due to bizarrely bad writing which she oversaw.

It should be noted that before this MGM had already sold off things like the Wizard of Oz and other success. Though aside from Bond they still have the rights to things like Stargate, Pink Panther, Rocky, Fame and a few others. But by selling off their library it severely weakened the Studio, but I don’t think the people in charge at the time particularly cared.

The James Bond character needs to be put against present threats. A bit like Batman, he requires clever gadgets. And attractive women are still a staple in movies and TV. A bit less with the womanizing I think, to be replaced with something more like romance. Heroes are needed. Heroes that are willing to risk all. Courage, discipline and a bit of dash are requirements. Being a stylish and clever white male is also a requirement. Bond must be British. And not a woman.

Hollywood is currently enamored with alternate realities and political concerns. Which is the wrong way.
