The use of the flying wing design in jet-powered fighters was explored not only by renowned aircraft designers such as Alexander Lippisch and the brothers Walter and Reimar Horten. During World War II, virtually every aircraft manufacturer had such projects. However, almost all of these projects were shelved.
At Arado, the flying wing fighter project was designated the E581. Unfortunately, much of the documentation for this project has not survived. However, we would like to use the surviving information to describe this project, and we hope that additional materials may surface somewhere that we can use to make this article more comprehensive.
The concept placed particular emphasis on long range flight, which was to be achieved with the help of special fuel tanks.
Projects
Nothing at all is known about the E 581-1 project.
The weight data from the E 581-2 project has been preserved (the document is dated November 18, 1944), from which it can be concluded that this was a single-seat fighter with a BMW 109-003 turbojet engine (See Appendix 1).
We know the fuel system calculations from Project E 581-3. In this project, the surface area of the protected fuel tanks is 9 m² and the unprotected tanks 4.5 m² (See Appendix 2).
The E 581-4 project was apparently a fighter with a He S 011 turbojet engine, but we cannot confirm our assumptions.
Fortunately, general arrangement drawings dated January 8, 1945, have been preserved from the E 581-5 project. From these drawings, we are able to establish the exact dimensions of the aircraft and the type of its engine – He S 109-011, (See Appendix 3), – as well as drawings of the fuel system, information about which we have placed in Appendix 4."

The larger E.581.4 and E.581.5 were both single-seat fighter designs of delta type wing configuration equipped with twin fins and rudders all placed above a deep barrel-shaped fuselage. Power was to be provided by one 1300kg Heinkel HeS 011 turbojet fed by a divided frontal air intake (.4) or a round frontal air intake (.5). Armament consisted of two MK 108 30mm cannons.
