and not to be Hollywood exploitation
so Wat next, a Hustler Apollo porn Movie ?

I'm sure I read (I say 'read' what i really mean is glance at and collapse laughing...) a novel that had a plot line VERY similar to the above mentioned Apollo 18. Anyone else remember that one? Or should I not have reminded you of it? ;)

FREEFALL by Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens dealt with a a cover-up of a secret Apollo mission to examine a Soviet lunar landing site and a shadow space program as well. No aliens in this book. But it's still a good read nonetheless.

It's just fiction. As long as they get some technical facts rightI'm happy.
I can get so cranky when airplanes or weapons are misslabeled in movies.
There's a bit of a Cloverfield vibe going on in this movie, it seems.

No, thankfully ;) I wasn't thinking of that one. I've a feeling the plot had some element of - new astronauts pitch up on the moon and find some other astronaut living in a cave / capsule / something and they all shoot it out with some other lot. You can probably tell how much of an impression it made... Right up there with the one Matthew Reilly novel, I once accidentally bought.

"Cyclops" by Clive Cussler, possibly?

http://www.amazon.com/Cyclops-ebook/dp/B002TXZR6I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1298487565&sr=8-2

From the above link: "....this latest Cussler suspense caper features, and ingeniously connects, a maverick American colony on the Moon, a fabulous sunken treasure sought by an unscrupulous, blimp-owning financier, and two cunningly devised Soviet schemes, one to steal U.S. space secrets, the other to replace Fidel Castro with a Kremlin puppet....".

Freefall... the plot sounds familiar.... ???

The story I am recalling had the Soviets secretly landing first on a one-way mission with the intention of discrediting the Americans by shooting down the Eagle lander with a modified SAM launcher. That would then give the Soviets the opportunity to send their man to the moon and bring him back again.
Is this the same book?

"Red Moon" by Michael Cassutt

(My bolds in the quote.)

Your last sentence is actually quite probable; since nearly all new Hustler films are spoofs of popular films and with travesty titles, for example "This is not Star Trek". If I re-call correctly they even made a version of their Adam West Batman spoof with the porn parts edited out. :-\

Lets pretend I only know this through comic book forums... ::)

Apollo 18 was the mission number of the moon landing mission in James Mitchner's Space - in both the book and the miniseries. A side note. An Apollo 18 patch from the miniseries can be seen on Data's jacket in the movie Goonies.

While this is a novel - not a movie - I'd like to also point out that the Apollo 19 mission comes to a tragic end after a series of switch failures in the first chapter of Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis' Mutant 59: The Plastic Eaters.

Marooned and Capricorn One were two movies that exploited the public's interest in the moon program even though these movies didn't deal with moon landings.

Another novel featuring Apollo 19 is Edwin Corleys' Sargasso. Apollo 19 is a follow-on to the ASTP, this time it's a Apollo/Salyut/Soyuz Project (ASSTP).

For some reason the Russians let the Americans dock with a military Saluyt (Armed with nukes!). After the joint mission the Apollo crew send their capsule back empty and sneak back on board, dying when their attempt to disarm the weapons instead triggers them.

What I always loved about this one was the author's idea about what NASA does when a mission goes really wrong:

When Jakes pulled the red switch, he set several events into motion. First he disconnected all radio and video feeds from downrange. They could not be reconnected without a complicated rewiring procedure. Second he destroyed both the endless tape loop and the video disc inside the console, wiping out any information that might have been recorded on them before he hit the panic button.

Finally, he had activated monstrous jamming transmitters located on Merritt Island in Florida, which blanketed the microwave frequencies from downrange to prevent any unauthorized receivers from picking them up.

...Actually, word has it that after Apollo 13 at least two pr0n producers looked at doing XXX flicks involving scenes shot in the Vomit Comet so that they could actually show the answer of whether or not sex is possible in zero-g. The only problem was that they couldn't get anyone providing VC services to accept the contract because they didn't want to be associated with pr0n. Can't say I blame them, but on the other hand even the quickest triggers take longer than the ~30 seconds it takes to complete a freefall loop in the Comet.

That being said, word has it that Ron Jeremy's up...er, coming performance as the Penguin rivals the Late Burgess Meredith's. Go figger...:p

Poor Ron has wanted to be a real actor for years, if not decades, and gets proud for acting as a clerk who is in a film for a minute and gets shot to death by bank robbers in a C-movie. :p
