The VC-10 was never a success commercially, it arrived too far behind the 707 and DC-8 and didn't offer enough advantage over them, but was a great success for the RAF in the transport and tanker role. The type flew its last operational mission last Friday, and earlier today ZA147 made the final flight of all. That particular plane will be scrapped.

I actually saw one of these fly over-- in New Mexico of all places-- it was something special to see.

I am of sufficient vintage that I actually saw them operating out of SFO. I won't reveal whether I was a wee lad at the time or not.

Remember driving past a line of them in Turkey during a particular effort late in the last century.
