Design improvements from the A321XLR are being back applied to existing A320/A321 NEO production lines as part of the fourth STEP incremental improvement programme.
These include A321 exclusive: A lighter wing with a single slot inboard flap on the A321 NEO as opposed to the existing dual slot design. Optional forward cabin temperature control independent of the rest of the aircraft. ETOC, an intermediate flap position during take off for airports with runway restrictions also present on the A330 and A350. New multifunctional LED runway lights.
General improvements: Common FDIMU across all models, 'E-rudder' offering weight savings, increased corrosion resistance of the floor structure in the two wet areas and the two bilges, titanium seat rails, and titanium covers for the aluminium lavatory and galley rails. And finally a new cobra duct air intake for the APU running to the top of the aircraft rather than the bottom which will also be applied to future XLR aircraft to draw cleaner air.
