AGM-158 JASSM

An AESA radar is a dramatic improvement in an F/A-18C's capability over its' original AN/APG-73 radar so I think that such a change in its' designation is warranted.

DoD disagrees. Sorry.

Back on the JASSM topic, I'm getting something like a 5.5 ft. length increase from the current JASSM-ER for the XR configuration using the below reference image. Anyone come up with a different estimate (or an actual source for current iteration of XR's length?)

OK, I re-estimate using the posted photo, and using lug spacing of 30inch, the airframe is closer to 18ft in length .....

Thanks, I was getting a tad bit over 19 ft using the same but mine was a very quick and dirty estimate..so probably off.

I decided to use the lug spacing as it is a known entity .... the posted photo's perspective is pretty fully "side" view, so any distortion is minimal ....

Previously I attempted using the painted stripes, but soon realised the spacing distances are visually different between the JASSM and the XR .....

I guess it may be sized to fit the B-1's internal bays despite the B-1 being phased out and also to make it fighter carriable. The width may also be larger than regular JASSM.

AGM-86 needs a specific pylon on the B-52; I expect XR is sized to use a MIL 1760 HBSA (the -86 compatible pylon allows for PAL but is not 1760, though the YSAF did do an RFI asking for it to be reworked as such).

Yes, I'm now getting closer to 18 ft as well.

Those are 30 inch lugs so you set that and measure the length of the weapon using that as a reference.

So do you set 2 markers at either end of the lugs and two at the ends of the missile, and set scale to 30 inches? I do that but it blocks moving to step 3. Don't know what I'm doing wrong??

No, just two markers at lug for reference and set them at 30 inches. Then the next step is where you estimate the length of the missile using a different set of markers.

Not sure what you are doing wrong. Set the scale at 30 inches with two markers in step 2 and move to step 3 and try to estimate the length.

Okay, figured it, you need to lay down markers for scaling in the scaling image not the first image.;) I got 217 inches (5.51m).

Does this measurement account for perspective/angle?

No matter since the perspective on the lug distance is parallel to the length of the airframe, and given that the view is pretty much "side-on" (the distance of the tip of missile to the camera is similar to the distance of the tail to the camera), I am in the opinion that you do not need to account for it, so there should be minimal loss of accuracy .....

How do you manipulate the image to get a straight on side elevation? I'm fairly certain there's technical-drawing technique but I can't recall what it is.
According to zjz (above) you don't need to because the lug spacing is parallel to the missile length.
