First Flight was expected about 1983 and it could be ready for deliveries by 1985.
Aeritalia wanted to partner with an US manufacturer to ensure its introduction in the American market. An stretched version (50-60 passenger) was also studied to be launched after the 30 passenger version.

The Aeritalia AIT-230 (or maybe AIT230) was the Italian precursor of the ATR 42 (along with its erstwhile competitor, Aérospatiale's AS.35).

Flight describes the AIT-230 as "a high-wing aircraft with a four-abreast cabin layout" ... "powered by two P&W PT6A-65s".

More than an ancestor of ATR it looks like a civil version of the G-222.

There's certainly a family resemblance but the AIT-230 was otherwise unrelated from the G.222. Compare the specs:

Length: AIT-230 16.35 m / G.222 22.7 m
Span: AIT-230 21.26 m / G.222 28.7 m
Empty: AIT-230 5500 kg / G.222 11940 kg
MTOW: AIT-230 9367 kg / G.222 31,800 kg
Cruise: AIT-230 386km/h / G.222 375km/h (max 540km/h)

Then there's engine power. The AIT-230 was to have twin PT6A-65s (1173 to 1249 shp), the G.222 had 3400 shp T64-P4Ds.
