Already mentioned here http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,28875.0.html,
the WLG,"Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Luftfahrt" (scientific society for aviation)
had startetd a contest for replacing high speed wind tunnels. Paul Klages (a German designer,
who already had made major contributions to the Focke-Wulf F 19 "Ente", Fa 330 "Bachstelze"
and several other designs) and Rudolf Schmidt submitted two solutions. A jet powered sled,
which would have used a circular rail track with a diameter of 16 km and an aircraft with
sharply swept wings, powered by a Hispano Suiza Verdon 450 jet engine (a French development
of the RR Tay) and having a crew of two, the pilot and the measurement engineer, seated in
the nose under a circular window.
Measurements should take place at a height of 7,000 to 12,000 meters with a maximum speed
of Mach 1.05, in a shallow dive up to Mach 1.2 .
Klages and Schmidt won that contest, nevertheless those designs were never realised.

The source material was discovered by René Scheer (author of "AGO-Flugzeugwerke: Vom Gitterrumpf
zur Me 262", see http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,21860.msg218684.html#msg218684),
who thankfully allowed for me to base my 3-view on the original (!) drawings.
Many thanks again, René !

To use aircraft as carrier for wind tunnel models or even full scale components was and is a well known
method, but I cannot remember another specialised aircraft design for that purpose.
