One of the proposals for a fast-climbing point-defense fighter was an "Otto" fighter (probably Me 109, Fw 190 etc.) equipped with an additional rocket engine.

Messerschmitt’s proposal to equip existing fighter aircraft (piston- or jet-powered) with an auxiliary rocket engine and externally mounted special tanks is to undergo a detailed technical evaluation by the Messerschmitt company by early January.
A positive outcome of this study could provide the simplest general solution for point defense.
