As the only major non-carrier RN warships built after WW2 they mark the transition of the RN from a force built round its battleships' big guns to a missile dominated navy.
The 6" and 3" guns fitted to them were supposed to be a new approach...

In "Storia Militare" n. 196 (January 2010) Enrico Cernuschi described the unknown project of an early Italian helicopter/VTOL carrier of 60's.
During 1965 the Italian Navy seriously considered the possibility to modify the proposed second "Vittorio Veneto" cruiser into a sort of small carrier...

In his excellent Royal Navy Destroyers and Frigates, Norman Friedman gives details of original plans for fitting Excocets to the Royal Navy surface fleet.
Shipbucket enthusiasts may already have seen this, but if not it may be of interest.
In 1969 the RN decided to buy 300 Exocets to fit 37...
During the development of the Invincible a 12 500 t helicopter cruiser was planed as an alternative to the later build ships does somebody has more data or drawings on ship ships ?
