US Navy F/A-XX designation / name guessing

I think they should call it the Super Marine, just to really confuse anyone who has any passing knowledge of aviation history. ;) I think the talk about a selection being made is just a reference to the Navy having made a decision. Now they have to see if the administration agrees with it or is going to go their own way.

F/A-46, as tribute to trump's birthday, but if the navy is in the ass kissing business they should really go for F/A-80, to commemorate trump's bday this year. this will ensure it shoots to the top of the list to come out this year as there's no point to commemorate bday this year but breaking cover next year. I really don't care what it's called as long as I get to see it sooner than later

F/A-28 because it's twice as good as the F-14.

Avenger. Its too bad that no jet fighter has taken up the moniker, and its even worse that the name has been ruined by god awful hollywood movies.

Doubly so if it really is a fat and slow striker with big strike length bays.

Better yet, paint in in the retro haze grey.

Pacific three-tone blue, I'm not a fan of Atlantic 3-tone gray.

Yes absolutely. Its too bad that they dont paint stealth fighters that way anymore. They painted one of the old hornets the retro three tone livery once.

Ghost grey for USAF and three tone for USN.

For namesake I would imagine that numbers 47-49 were allowed for the three contractors in the PCA effort of NGAD. So 50-52 for F/A-XX? Alphabetical assignment in order 50 B, 51 LM, 52 NG. If not Boeing's Wasp it'll be Northrop Grumman's Tomcat II.

Yes, the 6x AIM424 comment was thinking of Tomcat.

But if NG wins I hope it's Tigercat II.
Tigercat has no history.

"While the F7F was initially also known as the Grumman Tomcat, this name was abandoned, because it was considered at the time to have excessively sexual overtones;"

LOL

Considering that the F/A-XX is going to be built at the Phantom Works the name should really be Phantom 3 out of respect of the original McDonnel Phantom and then later the McDonnel Douglas F-4 Phantom 2 Anderman.

Well, if the program gets bogged down and delayed, could be the F/A-XX Constipator.

Apparently theres nothing left to discuss until actual information gets released...
Surprised they haven't even given it a number yet. When ATF was down selected, vehicles received their YF-22/YF-23 numbers and when the X-35 was declared the winner it received "F-35".

Trump seemed to mention the F-55 last year.

And when the NGAD winner was chosen, they announced the Penetrating Combat Air (PCA) component of the NGAD Family of Systems to be called the "F-47". Why they didn't do the same for the F/A-XX on the same kind of announcemen would be weird unless they're deliberating on which designation to use.

Why not F-45? He was also the Forty-Fifth President too, so if he wanted the F-47 designation to also reflect his second term, why not do the same with the F-45 to reflect his first term? Then again, it's ultimately up to the US Navy, and Trump probably used up all his "I want anything tied to me or my name" tokens with the Trump-Class.

Well, since all we got was an announcement and an illustration (On top of the prior ones released earlier), you're right on that.

Phantom X
(I know, not quite original but has still a nice ring to it and Musk could easily do the PR)
