Spin-counting was also a needlessly complex way to measure distance, just use the processor's clock and detonate after the appropriate number of cycles.

if you're already counting spin for the range safety like the 40mm grenades do, some Good Idea Fairy may have thought it was viable for counting range in general.

Again, the processor clock can do that for you, and do it more accurately.

But I’d rather spend the lion’s share of XM30 funds on pushing drones/aerials swarms/UGVs/loitering munition down to the Platoon level by any means... AMPV with band tracks, a remote 30/50mm turret, uprated suspension, Iron Fist APS, and increased troop bay volume (thanks to remote turret) while leveraging all the institutional knowledge of Bradley and heaps of spare parts sounds like the winning combo. Add an "effects platoon" to each Cavalry Troop, Tank Company, and Mech Infantry Company with 120mm NEMO mortars and loitering munition launchers - M914 30mm cannons with prox-rounds should replace the .50 cal wherever possible etc etc

Manning become an issue as if your leaning how the current front is you will an effects squad at the plt level and a effects platoon at the company as you suggest. See how this starts to look like the infantry basically looking for targets to provide the effects units. That may well be the future. Infantry reduced to designators, drone tm guards, and resuppliers.

YUP. Battle Order touched on this recently about future Division structure. The Army is limited by manning in its BCTs and is cannibalizing its maneuver units to man these new designator/effects units. Not too dissimilar from Force XXI/Modular BCTs controversy of having two maneuver battalions and one RSTA squadron per BCT...
They run the risk of having BCTs packed full of drones (which can be jammed, attracted, etc.) and not enough manpower to actually "hold the line," forcing other units into combat roles, causing the whole house of cards to collapse on itself.

 
Good god, this conversation about front size is reminding me of what I had to go with in a future setting: not only have infantry squads increased in size, but the frontage a unit can cover has shrunk immensely. The frontage a squad can cover today is now what a platoon covers in the setting. The frontage a platoon covers today? A company has that frontage in that setting.

In addition, unless the US actually has a massive AGI production line out of the ether, those drones are going to be useless. Period, end of story.

The Ukrainians are already manning very thin lines while the defense really is dispatchable
UGVs & drones. Modern day Pikemen.

Personally thought two maneuver to one RSTA was the way to go. All infantry should be motivated to remain in the Army & work up to becoming Cav Scouts. Inspiring & retaining these infantry soldiers up to Cav Scouts. There is a real need to promote w compensation to retain Scout, dismount skills in numbers. Start the infantry soldiers on the path to elite (not just AB Ranger).

I kinda liking this so each abct 2 CAB + 1 RSTA
Division level 1 ACR (replace Aviation brigade)?
