Magazines used to get people to colourise these images but I guess they're cutting out the middle man now.

You have to pay graphic artists, especially the well-known ones.
The trouble with AI 'colourised' photos is that they don't colourise the photos.
They take the original as a reference, then create an entirely new image based on it which is in colour. But which also has whichever other random elements the AI chooses to insert, for who-knows-what reason.
